Our campus student government, the Associated Students of Highline Community College (ASHCC) hosted its Annual Legislative Breakfast event on November 29th. This event was open to all staff, faculty and students of our campus community. The ASHCC works to bring our local State Representatives and Senators to campus for introductions, student presentations, and student round-table discussions.
The breakfast was to address various issues affecting our 34 colleges in Washington and I was selected as a speaker to address one of the issues that was raised as a concern. The issues that were on the agenda included the cost of higher education, the cost of textbooks, post-secondary education for inmates and the rise of sexual violence in our colleges.
I was able to present on the rise in sexual violence to five present legislators, my goal was to raise awareness on the number of cases on the rise and how better we can provide resources to victims of abuse but also be more vigilant in getting the perpetrators.
It was a great honor to have mayor Mia Gregerson present, Tina Orwall who’s currently the State representative for the 33rd LD at Washington state house representatives and senator Bob Hasegawa who is the 11th district state representative, he was recently reelected due to his diligence and equal representation of his district. Having such great leaders present really helped us achieve our goal which was to present our grievances to leaders who would represent us fully.
